Our Story
Ending hunger one person at a time!
The presence of hunger is all around us, affecting the very heart of our population. Children, elderly, students, workers, mothers, fathers… no one is immune. Each day, people struggle to feed themselves and their children as hunger saps their health, strength, vitality, and sadly, their hope for the future. The Divine Sent Food Cupboard is a 501 (C) (3) nonprofit organization established in the fall of 2003 on the property of the Oxford Church of God in Oxford, PA to provide food to those in need.
In 2003, we provided food while working out of the church basement, which meant climbing steep steps to deliver and stock the food. As the food cupboard grew, the steep steps complicated service to the elderly and disabled. It became apparent that we needed to secure a location at ground level in order to best serve the needs of our clients.
In 2010, we build a 20 ft. x 32 ft. x 10 ft. building on the grounds of the Oxford Church of God and the food cupboard was officially named the Divine Sent Food Cupboard. Soon thereafter, in collaboration with the Chester County Food Bank, we started a Gleaning and Growing Program to grow our own fresh fruits and vegetables. In 2011, the Eagle Scouts built 2 tables and 4 benches to hold our fresh produce, and we still use these today. Thank you, Eagle Scouts, you did a great job! We began a Farmers Unite to Stop Hunger! Program to distribute eggs and produce received from local farmers to people in need.
To meet the increasing needs of the community, a second warehouse was built to provide storage of additional fresh fruit, produce and non-perishable food to supplement the food currently received from state allocations, the Gleaning and Growing program, and food donations.
Services were donated to create the Divine Sent Food Cupboard website. In the first week the website was established, a gentleman found us online and was able to obtain assistance for his senior mother. This website has been a valuable resource to the community.
